“For all of us, love can be the natural state of our own being; naturally at peace, naturally connected, because this becomes the reflection of who we simply are.” ― Sharon Salzberg

Loving Kindness meditation uses simple phrases to evoke feelings of care and friendliness, first for ourselves and then for the world around us. Each time you say one of the phrases you are setting an intention, offering a warm wish and growing the love in your heart. Loving kindness is pure and unconditional, without expectation of anything in return.

We begin a loving kindness meditation with ourselves:

May I be happy.
May I be healthy.
May I be safe.
May I be at peace.

Repeat these words over and over to fill your heart with some much love that it overflows and extends easily towards others. And when you feel ready, gently expand your offering to your loved ones, friends, co-workers, city, country, world and eventually all living beings including animals and even the people that you don't like or consider your enemies.

If it’s helpful, feel free to create your own phrases or visualizations to inspire an open and loving heart. Jack Kornfield says, “the rule in lovingkindness practice is to follow the way that most easily opens your heart.”

We encourage you to spend time each day exploring your inner and outer worlds with a kind and loving heart. Check out Calm’s Loving Kindness Meditations to support you this month.
